Your child’s foot pain is often caused by normal developmental changes, active lifestyles, or something easily treated at home. Common culprits include growth spurts, overuse from running, or minor skin and nail irritations. However, persistent discomfort should be monitored.
The exact cause of the pain usually depends on where it hurts and your child’s age:
- Heel Pain (Ages 8–14): The most common culprit here is Sever’s Disease (calcaneal apophysitis). This is a harmless inflammation of the heel’s growth plate, typically triggered by sports, running, or a sudden growth spurt.
- Pain at Night (Ages 3–12): This is often classified as classic “growing pains,” which cause a deep, throbbing ache in the evenings or wake them up at night.
- Toe Pain: This is frequently caused by external irritations, such as an ingrown toenail, a blister, or plantar warts on the bottom of the foot.
- Arch/General Foot Fatigue: Flexible flat feet are very common in toddlers and young children. While rarely painful on its own, it can cause arches to ache or lead to foot fatigue after heavy activity
