Question: My child has flat feet. Should I be worried?

Answer: I am often asked to evaluate children for flat feet. Parents are often very concerned about the way their child’s feet look. The majority of these children have no problems at all other than the feet don’t look like everyone else’s feet.

Research has shown that as many as 40 percent of children would have what we consider “flat feet.” The majority of these children have no problems at all and flat feet, in general, are considered a normal variation with no treatment needed. Most of these children simply have looseness in the ligaments that connect the bones. This condition makes their feet look very flat.

However, there are other causes of flat feet. Some of these can cause significant problems for kids. Even some children with typical flat feet will have significant pain with activities.

A thorough evaluation of the lower extremities a Resonance Podiatrist can tell whether there are any more serious underlying problems that may need to be treated. Often, orthotics can help with significant pain if that is affecting activities.
